Healthy Habits Start Here: Back-to-School Tips for a Healthy Smile

A Fresh Start for Your Smile

There's something about August that feels like a fresh start. As summer winds down and backpacks come back out, families begin settling into new routines. School schedules fill up, calendars get busier, and the excitement of a new season begins.

While you're checking off school supply lists and organizing your family's schedule, don't forget one important part of a healthy routine - a healthy smile.

At First Impression Dental, we believe that small, consistent habits make the biggest difference when it comes to your oral health. Whether you're heading back to school, returning to work after summer vacations, or simply looking to get back into routine, August is the perfect time to reset your smile.

1. Get Back Into a Consistent Brushing Routine

Summer often means later bedtimes, vacations, and unpredictable schedules. Before you know it, brushing before bed or taking the full two minutes in the morning can start to slip.

As routines return, make brushing twice a day for two full minutes a priority. It's one of the simplest ways to prevent cavities and keep your smile healthy.

Tip: Set a timer or play a favorite two-minute song to make brushing more enjoyable for younger children.

2. Make Flossing a Daily Habit

Brushing cleans the front, back and chewing surfaces of your teeth - but it can't reach between them.

Daily flossing removes plaque and food particles from the places your toothbrush simply can't reach. Just a few minutes each day can help reduce your risk for cavities and gum disease. Healthy habits aren't about being perfect-they're about being consistent.

Tip: If you have trouble remembering to floss every night, set out your floss next to your toothbrush.

3. Choose Water More Often

Whether you’re packing lunches for school or filling your water bottle for work, choosing water instead of sugary drinks is one of the best decisions you can make for your smile.

Water helps:

A reusable water bottle is one of the easiest “school supplies” for a healthy smile!

Tip: If you have trouble getting the recommended amount of water daily, try drinking from a straw. Studies show that water consumption goes up when drinking through a straw.

4. Pack Smile-Friendly Snacks

Busy schedules often lead to quick snacks, but choosing tooth-friendly options can make a big difference.

Great choices include:

These foods help nourish your body while supporting healthy teeth and gums.

Tip: Have healthy snacks prepped to avoid reaching for convenient unhealthy ones.

5. Don’t Forget About Sports Safety

Back-to-school also means the return of sports and extracurricular activities.

Whether it’s football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball, or skateboarding, protecting your smile is just as important as wearing the right equipment.

A properly fitted mouthguard can significantly reduce the risk of chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth.

Tip: Due to ever growing and changing mouths, children should have a new mouthguard made for each season of sports.

6. Schedule Your Routine Dental Visit

August is one of the best times to schedule your family’s dental appointments before the busy fall and holiday season arrives.

Routine hygiene and exams allow us to monitor your oral health, catch small concerns early, and keep your smile on the right track.

Preventive care today helps avoid bigger dental problems tomorrow.

Tip: To avoid missing crucial dental appointments, schedule the entire year of dental appointments and make them a priority.

7. Healthy Habits Are Better Together

One of the best ways to encourage healthy habits is to practice them as a family.

Children learn by watching the adults around them. When parents prioritize brushing, flossing, healthy eating, and routine dental visits, those habits become part of everyday life.

Oral health is truly a lifelong investment-and it’s never too early or too late to start building healthy routines.

Tip: Make family appointments together to help provide support and exposure of oral health.
