Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are a type of removable oral prosthetic used to restore missing teeth. Dentures take a little while to adjust to and they don’t feel the same as your permanent teeth. However, thanks to advanced technologies and manufacturing techniques, modern dentures are more comfortable and natural-looking than ever.

Are there different types of dentures?

At First Impression Dental Fresno, Dr. Lent offers both complete and partial dentures.

Complete dentures

You might benefit from complete dentures if you’re missing all of your permanent teeth. Complete dentures fit snugly over the surface of your gums. The top denture is solid and covers the roof of your mouth; the bottom denture looks like a horseshoe, making room for your tongue.

Partial dentures

You might benefit from partial dentures if you’re only missing some of your permanent teeth. Partial dentures sit on top of a metal framework that attaches to dental crowns. Like complete dentures, you can remove partial dentures at any time.

What type of dentures are right for me?

To determine the type of dentures you’ll most benefit from, make an appointment with Dr. Lent at First Impression Dental Fresno. Following an oral exam, review of your oral health history, and discussion of your goals for treatment, Dr. Lent can make recommendations. He might also take a series of oral radiographs to get a closer look at your tooth roots and jawbones.

How do I care for my dentures?

Dentures are tough and durable, but they don’t last forever. As you get older, your mouth changes, causing your dentures to loosen. If you experience trouble chewing or speaking, or your mouth becomes sore, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with Dr. Lent.

To extend the lifespan of your dentures, brush them carefully on a daily basis using a soft bristle toothbrush. You should also soak your dentures in a denture cleaning solution overnight and make an appointment at First Impression Dental Fresno if your dentures chip, crack, or become loose.

Nothing can replace your natural, permanent teeth entirely, but dentures come pretty close. If you’re interested in learning more, request an appointment at First Impression Dental Fresno by calling the office today.
